Fifty farmers, including 10 women, from Sauri Millennium Village, Western Kenya, were trained in July on new concepts in water and agriculture management by a team from the Arava Institute of Environmental Studies. The training came as a result of a two year old collaboration between The MDG Centre and Mashav, Israel's National Agency for International Development Cooperation.

In the savanna of central Mali where rainfall is unreliable, water is precious and clean water rare. Relying on unprotected water sources for drinking and cooking, most of the community in the Millennium Village of Tiby has been constantly at risk of exposure to waterborne disease, which can lead to serious illness and even death.

Yesterday, May 30, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited the Millennium Villages project (MVP) in Mwandama, Malawi. While there he had the opportunity to meet with local community members first hand and to see and hear about how they are pursuing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a very practical day-to-day reality. "The Millennium Development Goals: How to step up the efforts?" was the central theme of the 3rd "States General", which took place in Brussels on May 4, 2010. The opening session was presided by Her Royal Highness Princess Mathilde, who highlighted the importance of the achievement of the MDGs, Belgium's commitment to the Goals and her own experiences in the developing world. Belgium is expected to play an active role in the MDG summit in September this year, as it will be under Belgium’s rotating presidency of the European Union.

Earlier this month the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced more than $5 million in grants to help ten universities establish cross-disciplinary Master's in Development Practice (MDP) degree programs in eight countries around the world. These add to the $10 million in grants that the foundation allocated last year to seed MDP programs in a dozen universities around the world. This new global academic network now includes more than 20 schools across 15 countries and five continents.
